Periods don't suck: honoring your bleed

From being laughed at for the blood stain on the back of our shorts to starting our period mid-sex with an adolescent boy, we have likely been taught through many experiences and social cues that our periods are dirty, disgusting and shameful. At best, our cycles are meant to be kept to ourselves and plugged up by highly chemically scented tampons that disconnect us from our flow and allow us to “live like a man” and “not let our period stop us”. This brainwashing is the very thing that reinforces the disconnection of womxn from their sacred cycles and rhythms. Further isolating us from accessing the power of our intuition, connection to nature and sacred power of our bodies.

KNOWING and EMBRACING our moon cycle (period) empowers us to live our lives in flow with our natural energy levels which are always in flux. Womxn are experiencing a life/death/rebirth cycle every single month. For that reason, it is important that we get to know our monthly energy levels so that we can live in feminine flow instead of the paradigm of the masculine PUSH.

Many of the systems that we have all bought into and operate inside of out of necessity were not created for femme (or black, or borwn, or indigenous) bodies. These systems were made to suit rich, white, men, and so it’s no wonder womxn struggle to force themselves into these rigid structures. What if we could live our lives according to our sacred rhythms? Listening to the deep wisdom of our bodies. Resting when we needed to rest, creating when we were ready to create, making love when we were fertile and juicy. All of it. THAT is what happens when we begin to make contact with our cycles & rhythms. THAT is the essence of the femme paradigm. Flow, yielding, variance, honoring of what IS moment by moment.

PATTERNS I NOTICE IN WOMXN:

  • We push down and demonize our cycles.

  • We are trying to be “good men” and so we try to make our cycles as hidden as possible.

  • We have adopted the belief that our cycles are “gross” and so we’ve disowned them.

  • We talk shit on our PMS CYCLES and try to numb out symptoms instead of working with the shadow/death cycle as an opportunity for growth.

Before the patriarchal model became the dominant paradigm, mother worship ruled many cultures. Blood was sacred and celebrated. It represented fertility, abundance, purification and more. Sex magick was used in the temples and the powers and mysteries of the femme body were celebrated and respected. The puritanical patriarchy feared the powers of the femme and demonized not only sex but also HER cycles. She was deemed “hysterical” and “unsanitary”. Through this messaging we were taught to despise our bodies and deny our powers. And now, enough is enough, it is time to find our way back to the ancient ways.

QUESTION: WHAT ARE WAYS YOU HAVE RELATED TO YOUR CYCLE WHICH ARE OUT OF INTEGRITY WITH WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THE POWER OF YOUR OWN BODY?

THE FEMME SUPERPOWER OF CYCLES & RHYTHMS

We are deeply connected to the world and nature because our bodies go through the same seasons as nature. Just like in nature, there is wisdom and a purpose to all of the cycles and seasons. If we are tuned into these cycles there is great wisdom to be learned and lots of ALCHEMY TO HAPPEN. Can you reframe your cycle as a spiritual experience where magick happens?

PHASES OF MENSTRUATION AND THE SEASONS

Menstruation - Winter

the follicular phase - Spring

Ovulation - Summer

the luteal phase - Fall

KNOWING YOUR CYCLE

Depending on if you have a 28-30 day cycle these will look different

Week 1: Inner Winter – Around day 1-6 of your menstrual cycle when you are bleeding.

This season's archetype is the wise womxn/crone/visionary. This season is a potent time to do shadow work. Instead of resisting our numbing out the intense sensations that can come with your bleeding cycle, what if you investigated what came up as a potential place to be healed, loved and integrated. Every single month you have an opportunity to do potent shadow work by observing what comes up for you during your bleeding phase. There is a stigma that women are “crazy” during their periods. What if instead of it being “crazy”, you recognized that your cycle was revealing parts of you that need healing, or release through tears.

Week 2: Inner Spring – Around day 7-13 when you’re in the pre-ovulation phase.

This season’s archetype is the goddess/maiden. This is a time for rebirth and is often a time when womxn feel most energized and euphoric. This is a time to make love, perform sex magick, and drop into your sensuality. This is also a time to plant seeds energetically and engage in new projects.

Week 3: Inner Summer – Around day 14-21 during your ovulation phase.

This season’s archetype is the mother/healer. During this time you are at your most physically fertile. This is a time for community building, nurturing yourselves and others and speaking your truth. This is also a time for nurturing seeds/giving birth to new projects, ideas and ways of being. This is also the time to be most cautious if you are having sex and not desiring to get pregnant. Practice very safe sex as your body is primed and ready for conception.

Week 4: Inner Fall – Around day 22-29 during your luteal phase (winding down again).

This season's archetype is the wild woman/priestess/enchantress. This is an internal time to prepare your moon temple. Pay attention to any messages coming forward through your intuition or from your guides/angels as the veil is thin for you at this time. Avoid highly extroverted situations at this time and be gentle with your body. A good time for breast massage and embodiment practices to prepare for your bleed. Also, a perfect time to perform yoni steam (bes trite before a bleed).

BLOOD RITUAL

In addition to honoring your cycles, another beautiful way to honor your femme rhythms is through blood ritual. During your bleeding time, collect some of your blood in a small jar or on a piece of paper (make sure you refrigerate any bottled blood until use). You can then return this blood back to earth in a gratitude ritual to mama gaia, in a manifestation ritual, purification ritual or self love ritual.

WHAT IF I DON’T BLEED?

Plenty of femme identifying folx do not bleed, however, that doesn’t mean they are not moving through a cycle. Trans womxn, womxn going through menopause and womxn with certain forms of birth control may not bleed. If you inhabit a femme identified body, you are naturally cycling through the seasons emotionally and energetically and can use many of the same principles listed above to honor yourself and the divine feminine.
